Traffic Building Part 2: Bringing it All Together

As we discussed yesterday, traffic is essential for any blog, I was reading an article at CourtneyTuttle.Com (Where did all the bleeping bloggers go?) this morning and I saw that she started getting her first amount of ‘decent’ traffic at the three month mark, this is most probably the usual or the most common time that traffic begins to increase. One important point to remember though is that you have to blog at least every day, so at the end of the 3 month mark you can have about 100 to 150 posts so that Google can munch on the content.

Traffic building can be difficult from one perspective but one thing that you must remember is that there is no proven formula for success, although some people’s ideas work better than others. So…are there any more techniques the everyday blogger can use for traffic success? Yes there are.

Technorati: Make sure that you are listed on Technorati and that your authority is going up, take a proactive role to ensure it is going up by doing some review and link exchanges. Technorati is a very important aspect of being noticed and recognised in the blogging industry.

Contest: Running a contest or competition on your blog is a great way to attract more visitors…as long as everyone knows. You can make inform people about your contest by sending messages to your community members at places like MyBlogLog, BumpZee, BlogCatalog etc…Alternatively you can try emailing a bunch of people who you have on a mailing list to inform them about your upcoming offer. Great giveaways: Anything to do with Ipods, Computers, Technology and Peripherals is fantastic!

Guest blogging: Getting some interviews with high profile bloggers out there is a great way of increasing traffic because if you are lucky they might just write a post about the interview on their blog or you will still get traffic if you inform your friends in the blogging community. High profile bloggers: John Chow, Joel Comm, Darren Rowse, Shoemoney etc…

Link to other blogs: An important aspect of high quality blogs is that they know their niche very well and have the ability to link to other posts from other bloggers, the great thing about this is that the other blogger you are linking to may link back to you in some way or form in the future…or if they don’t you are still building a good reputation.

Comment on other blogs: I know many people see this one as okay…but not the best way to get traffic. But, they could not be anymore false, my Google Analytics informs me that this is one of the top five ways in which my website gets traffic…is that proof or proof?

Build reputation and a mailing list: If you have a great new innovative product or service at your blog you can use the emails of people you know in the blogosphere to inform them of your new product. They will most likely come to your blog and check the product out and possibly comment on it at their own blog.

All of these are simple ways to build traffic, but they are very underutilised in the blogosphere. I urge all bloggers to use the above techniques and they will definitely get some more traffic.

    Thanks Erik,

It is so important to take an active role in making sure that people know about your site…otherwise you are only cheating yourself don’t you think? So many people do this to themselves unknowingly nowadays.

    Kind Regards

All good points and the commenting on other HIGH PROFILE blogs is how we initially got ALL of our traffic. About a year in now and http://www.askTheAdmin.com is seeing 4-5,000 uniques a day and we have had 35,000+ hits in a single day.

The one this I should emphasize is QUALITY over QUANTITY every time. If you post garbage who will want to come back and read it? Write what you think other want to read. Unless you don’t care who’s reading and then more power to you!

Get that Alexa rank up and your feedburner feeders as well.
