What Makes a Good Site?

This question is one that is very often left behind…but it is one of the most important questions which can be asked. What do YOU want from a particular site? Is it good navigation? Functionality? Visually pleasing? Great Content? We can criticise sites openly but what many people find difficult is giving that site constructive criticism, why don’t you like a particular site?

As people who view sites everyday we like to check out other sites and openly comment about them. These comments may be negative or positive…most of the time we make these comments because that blog is so successful but it has such a disgusting design or something of the sort. The point that I am trying to make is that we openly criticise success because we believe our product is better but we are not getting as much coverage as the other less visually pleasing blog.

Why do we do this? Usually, people who criticise other blogs are either looking for attention, do not have a powerful blog with many readers or are not succeeding in blogging altogether. Although I say this there are some genuine comments which people make about blogs which are true.

A site design is good, but having great content is more important. Content has always been and will always be king, without content your blog is a dead blog…without great content your blog is alive but has limited visitors. So, stop insulting other blogs that do better than you, get out those old english manuals that help you develop a news story and use that format as a starting point for writing great content.

I believe firmly in a blog that has both great content and a great site design. Content and design go hand in hand with each other, because the medium in which you present the content is important if you want the user to stay on your blog, not just read the content and go.
