I read a highly interesting post today over at Etienne Teo’s site, it was regarding the make money online niche and it got some really interesting responses. You can check it out over here: Make Money Online, Overcrowded and Newbie Filled.
This got me thinking, what are the problems with make money online niche, and a few of the posts over there answered that question for me.
I also decided to do a little diagram which can be seen above regarding the make money online niche, the person at the top has made it! Yay! But no, it’s not fame and fortune…it’s just fame. The fact of the matter is that John Chow and ProBlogger (Darren Rowse) have been building their blogs for about 4 to 6 years…how will you compete with that? Nowadays, the only possible way is with paid marketing.
A few people commented that the make money online niche was
1. Filled with new people: This is definitely true because the ‘make money online’ niche is filled with so many new people who decide to start a blog about making money, but they are missing one key ingredient - that is, they do not possess sufficient knowledge and experience to talk about successful ways of making money online!
2. No proven success: Many people want to tell you about making money online, they have their TLA, Bidvertiser and AdSense banners hovering all over the place, but they do not have proof to show that they have been able to make money online. If you do not have a system whereby people can replicate your success by reading what you post, you are pretty much dead in the water.
3. Bad blogs: The make money online niche is absolutely filled with blogs which are extremely poor in design and quality of content. They basically stick a blog up and hope that revenue will come soon…but it never does.
Courtney Tuttle provided an extremely valuable tip which said: Give up the make money online niche and find another more profitable one, leave the make money online one as a journal. Fabien (Me): I could not agree more Court!
John Chow said that you should only enter the niche if your brand is strong enough. Tim from eMonetized advised that blogger’s should focus on originality and a sub niche. Carl Ocab said - be unique and focus on your marketing.
At the end of the day, people can give all the advice they want, but I think that Court had some very solid advice when he said, go and find another more profitable niche. I have already been planning to open a new blog in a totally different niche. I have planned out several marketing strategies including Word of Mouth, Pay Per Click, Forums, Communities and Reviews. So sign up to the feed and keep updated!

I agree with you the niche is filled to the gills and may seem over-saturated..However I think this also can work in our advantage as it provides a plethora of ideas, many networking opportunities and different perspectives on how to make money online!
I’d also add with the Top 3 you mentioned, I believe a few of them had other successful sites or ventures they were part of prior to their make money blogs (which lend more credibility). I may be wrong on that..
Yes, I do believe that John had already started The Tech Zone and Darren Rowse may have started digital photography school (after I think). As for Shoemoney my knowledge relating to his ventures is limited.
I do agree with you and I highly believe that we should be taking new directions with each blog we start.
