As a fellow winner in my contest, Not John Chow Dot Com won and I will be reviewing the site today. Unfortunately this is one of those reviews which will not be all glitzy and dazzling, not all sites can be glamorous…
Not John Chow Dot Com is another one of those sites trying to piggy back on the success of John Chow, why have a domain called Not John Chow…there are no other reasons. Not John Chow hopes that the site will become as equally as successful as John Cow because Chow gave the Cow lots of publicity and continues to do so.
What makes this site so different? Will it succeed? This site definitely has good intentions…but with those come some typical errors made by first time internet ventures. Let us start of with some of my personal favorites, that is site design and advertising festival.
The site is…interesting to say the least, I really think that if this site wants to become high profile, it needs to get a redesign, or at least a new theme, I mean there are literally thousands upon thousands of Wordpress themes available for the taking, I would highly recommend choosing a new one that has a bit more class.
Advertising festival: Ok…let me start off by saying, the advertising on this site is very, very, very heavy. The left sidebar is filled with Bidvertiser, Widgetbucks, AuctionAds, AdSense, Referral Links etc… The secrets of good monetization is always and will always be less is more and remember cloak the links do not make them stand out.
Oops…did I forget, there are also those annoying little things called Kontera content links being run on the blog. The masthead (top of the site) is filled with badly designed 125 x 125 ad spots which seem like they have been done using Paint.
I’ll stop dissing the site now…okay let’s get things straight, I am a supporter of anyone and everyone who is making a site to try and finance his or her life/style…but I cannot lie, do you want me to say this is the most beautiful site in the world and it has so much great content? No, this is not an advertorial…try ReviewMe for those.
I respect the owner of Not John Chow, but I highly recommend outsourcing for web design etc… It is definitely worth it. That’s all for today folks, till next time.

I visited that site once, after reading a comment the owner had left on johnchow.com. I think he said he’d made 39 cents for his first month. When I saw all the ads, I wondered which ones (or one) the cents had come from.
One thought: “Wow, look at all the ads! So many places to earn money…”
Another thought: “Wait, that won’t work! More ads than content will send visitors away.”
I mean if he wants to make money…ok, but don;t need to make the website “Ad-Central” I mean seriously, no wonder he only made 39 cents…he should start doing paid posts..

Thank you for the honest review.
I recognize that most of the criticisms of my blog are true! I myself have been questioning some of the advertising that I have set in motion.
Currently, I am rethinking my whole strategy and I will happily take your advice as well as many others who have shared their honest opinions with me.
First on my agenda is the search for a new theme that will give me a new look that is more appropriate. If you have any recommendations, please share.
As far as the “Advertising Festival?” All I can say is that this was an experiment gone wrong. I am like a kid in the candy store that can’t decide what to get, so I try everything. You have simply reminded me that I need to slow down and evaluate my choices better.
Thanks again for the honest review.
