This blog post was designed to find out how effective the Chow effect really is, some people claim it is the best thing since sliced bread…well, let us find out! I decided to check out a couple of reviews, most of them were done during times before or after the Christmas holidays so there should not be a problem regarding reduced traffic etc… The sites I chose were www.maxblogpress.com, www.wrevenue.com, www.atomicblogging.com, www.jtjnet.com and www.hamletbatista.com.
The above were reviewed well, some got bad press, some got good press and some got a purely neutral review. A John Chow review and almost any high profile blogger review will make or break you, unless you take his or her advice and get reviewed again. So here is the graph…
As you can see, the results are very interesting, the common trend I found was that if the review was positive more people would visit it. Now I know it sounds like something very simple, but the important factor to note is that before you go and buy a review make sure everything on your site is good, make sure you can get around the site easily, make sure you have unique content etc…
Why did John give bad press to some sites…well it was not because he hated the people. It was because the sites authentically had major problems. Some of these problems ranged from posting only once a month to a product being for the average person who knows nothing about blogging.
Why did wrevenue and maxblogpress do so well? For starters the WRevenue review did well because the post had a story like this one…
Scott’s story is the kind that Internet dreams are made of. It’s the kind of story that draws millions to try their hand at making money online. A few months ago, Scott emailed me asking if he should start his own blog about making money on the Web. told him to go for it. Over the weekend, Scott sent me an email saying his new blog, W Revenue dot Com, was up. was going to give him a shout out but he ordered this ReviewMe review instead. (from www.johnchow.com)
So John was basically a good friend of this guy and could not really insult the blog etc…John was already in a frame of mind to praise the blog no matter what happened. This is fair, he’s a friend of John’s, I would do the same any day for one of my blogging friends! So you can’t really get angry or frustrated.
Why did Max Blog Press do so well, it’s a pretty simple equation actually…John sees Max Blog Press, John Likes Max Blog Press, John writes a great review for it, John Chow copycats love it too, they use it and it the site gets a huge traffic rise.
The John Chow effect: Is there something similar to the John Chow effect? I don’t know, perhaps, maybe another blogger has more RSS readers and does reviews, I don’t know any, tell us if you do and we will check them out! Do you think the effect works? Do you like the idea of the John Chow effect? Tell us!
