Blogs can always be improved in some form or another, there is no doubt about that whatsoever. This is exactly what I was doing yesterday, many call what I did some “blog maintenance” but in actual fact it was blog improvement. I used to do what any new blogger would do, I had created many categories and I had put single posts into four or more categories. Now… I never knew this could be bad, but it actually is.
Assign Posts to their Correct Category
This is very important to do because it helps everyday people find what they are trying to look for without having to see one post in four separate categories. But more importantly it helps reduce duplicate content issues which search engines may penalize you for in the future via a Page Rank drop or the one and the only Sandbox effect.
What Exactly Did I Do
I started from October 2007 and went all the way until January 2008, I searched through 145 posts and I was opening up all the posts that I had assigned multiple categories to. I changed each post that had been given multiple categories and slotted it into only one category which I believed was the best for that post. It took a lot of time but it was well worth doing, I now have the peace of mind that my visitors will not be seeing the same post in five different categories…and the peace of mind that I will not need to deal with that part of duplicate content.
I Also Cleaned Up
This was the part two of my improvement, I cleaned up my posts, I found junk posts and deleted them, I found posts which were giving a bit too much link love to big player bloggers and deleted them. I will probably do this every 3 months from now on to reduce having to do it after a year’s worth of blogging.
Do You Clean Up Your Blog?
I am very interested to know if you do any blog improvement, do you go through your old posts and delete them? Have you been blogging for two years and you have never done any sort of cleaning whatsoever? It would be great to hear your stories or blog spring cleaning and blog improvement.
