So many people buzz about social media, they think it is the best thing since sliced bread, and some just think it is useless. The thing is, if you are not going to use a social media site to it’s full potential, it will be useless. BlogCatalog is a very popular blog directory. But it can definitely be a lot to take in at first, I know this from experience. This simple tutorial will give you all the information you need to successfully use BlogCatalog and get exposure and traffic to your site.
FRIEND ADDING You can use BlogCatalog to your advantage…there are a huge amount of features which make it better the MyBlogLog. The first important thing you should note able BlogCatalog is the fact that you can add a lot of friends at a time (I don’t even know if there is a limit…which is great!). Many people have used the ability to add huge numbers of friends to their advantage, some people have literally thousands of friends (5000, 6000, 7000, 8000+). This is a big thing because it means that the particular person has probably attained quite a few RSS subscribers by adding that huge amount of people.
BROADCASTING Yet another fantastic feature of BlogCatalog is the ability to post a broadcast, when you do this, your logo and your headline will appear in a small box on the right hand side of your profile page under the tab “Broadcasts”. This means that when you post a broadcast, it will appear on each and every one of your friends profiles, that means it will appear on 7000 profiles if you have that many friends. The amount of traffic broadcasts can bring is quite large and it is definitely a highly useful feature of BlogCatalog.
NEIGHBOURHOOD ADDING Now, this is one of those things which has it’s benefits and it’s disadvantages. By having a lot of neighbourhoods, you are allowing other people to see 15 other links or sites which they can go to, personally I like to have only one neighbourhood and that is my own. This means that there is a greater probability of people coming to my blog from the links and the sole neighbourhood available. As you can see on the left, I have only one neighbourhood, and all the blog posts are from my neighbourhood.
CREATING GROUPS Another great feature from BlogCatalog is the ability to create groups, I recently created my own group called “SmallFishBigMoney SuperStarZ”, my group talks about site monetization and the various ways in which you can successfully do it. I have called upon some followers to join the group and the response has been pretty good. You can join my group here: SmallFishBigMoney SuperStarZ! Creating groups is a great way to network with other bloggers in your niche and talk about stuff in general.
There are a couple more great features about BlogCatalog like discussions where you can ask people questions and get some feedback about your site or a product etc…Discussions are good if you are doing some research about something, whether it is good or bad etc…It can also bring some traffic if you are asking a question or offering something that everyone wants to know about. In conclusion BlogCatalog is an organized and user friendly site, it is better than MyBlogLog in several ways and continues to improve as a site and a community. i agree, 100%. Blog Catalog is the greatest, and for all the reasons you mention, except one. On neighborhoods, I don’t quite follow that one.

The thing with neighbourhoods is…you shouldnt have more than 1, and that one is your own. This reduces the likelihood that people will click on other neighbourhoods and will stay on your profile.
hey i liked your post a lot. it provides a good info about blogcatalog. i agree with what you said about neighborhood. but isn’t the exchange of neighborhood links a way to grow ur own blog’s popularity. i mean if we wont join any neighbor then who going to join our neighbor. and i feel that this shows that we are not socializing enough. completely my views. nothing personal…
Thanks Enblingbiz,
Whilst I do agree that we must socialize…but I do that by adding friends. I am big on adding lots of friends, I have 400 at the moment, but this grows as I add more. I usually do it in 200 friend bursts.
Thanks a lot for your comments.
Kind Regards,
Fabien
I also recently found out those great features on Blog Catalog; I also use Facebook and other Social Media sites but BC is the only blog directory I really use.
I think the point of adding other neighbourhoods is to have some of your blog posts added to other neighbourhoods too so that people can access your blog even when they are on someone else’s profile.

I guess it is a sacrifice you have to make if you want only your blog posts to display, it is one of those things that I think we should be allowed to say, display only our blog posts even though we have joined several neighbourhoods. Thanks for your comment!

Wow, this is a nice overview of BlogCatalog. I have been a member of this site since November and have picked up a lot of friend adds just from visiting other people’s sites and having them see my name and avatar in their widgets. However, I was not aware of the broadcasting ability - I need to figure out how to do that because I have enough people that have added me to their friend networks for this to possibly bring in some additional traffic. The discussion and groups features are good too; I have been able to find other DoFollow bloggers this way, which increases the quality of potential backlinks and improves SEO efficiency.
Thank you for your comments Karlonia, yes the broadcast feature can actually bring in a few visitors. I highly recommend it as a feature to use. BlogCatalog beats MyBlogLog in several ways.
Kind Regards,
Fabien
