Five Proven Methods For Generating Site Traffic

March 15th, 2008 by Fabien

Traffic, Traffic and More Traffic: The eternal search for traffic to blogs and sites have made people go to great extremes, sometimes doing things which end with their sites getting penalized. Have you ever thought about this though, are there proven methods for getting site traffic? The answer is yes and they are sometimes so obvious…you totally forget about them.

SkyRocket Your Site Traffic Now!

1. You Should Release An Electronic Report or Guide: I know you get told to do this so many times…but how many of you actually do? More importantly, are the reports you create any good? Do they provide new content? The answer to this is probably no, this is the core problem with 99.9% of the reports available online, they don’t deliver. When you make a report, remember to keep it simple and informative. By doing this people can analyze the content quicker and decide whether he or she wants to endorse it or not. (Example: Caroline Middlebrook Hits The Jackpot!) By releasing an electronic report it may go viral and if it does you may experience a surge of hits to your site and an increase in your RSS feed readers, traffic will continue to flow because more and more bloggers will be buzzing about it in the sphere.

2. Commenting On Other Blogs…Thoughtfully: This one is very important, and it is not the usual stuff you hear about commenting. There is no right way or wrong way to comment, but there is a better way to comment. You should not comment randomly by leaving meaningless messages like “great one” or “good” or “thanks”…Leave something constructive that is value adding to the post. In response to this post I might say something like – “Thanks for the post Fabien, Just a tip about more traffic, you can also use communities at MyBlogLog and BlogCatalog“. Now that’s a good comment that adds value to my post. People are more likely to visit your site if your contributed to a blog post positively.

3. Using Social Media Sites Effectively: This one is very important – anyone can use Digg, StumbleUpon, Mixx, Reddit etc…But can they use it effectively is perhaps the question of greater importance. Using these sites is not all about submitting your own articles and making people visit your site. The online mentality has changed, the Internet is becoming more community oriented and if you ask people to Digg or Stumble your articles, they might just do it. Remember to mingle with other people, leave shouts for them, submit their articles and they will reciprocate eventually. By working the social media sites correctly, you will definitely notice a surge in traffic.

4. Make Your Blog An Relaxing And Fun Place To Be! Personally I get annoyed when I go to a blog that’s got it all wrong. When I say this I am talking about the bad choice of colours, the crude forms of navigation, the content that’s worth less than the pennies in a busker’s hat etc…We need to work together as a blogging community to make our blog’s better, not worse. So choose a theme that says ‘Come Back Soon’ instead of one that says ‘I Don’t Care About My Reputation’. By making your blog a relaxing place to be, people will come back. If they like the colour scheme, the content and your writing style, you just got yourself a new visitor.

5. Don’t Forget About The Search Engine Optimization: I know this is not everyone’s cup of tea…But it is something that you just have to look at and implement. You could be losing out on very valuable visitors, tens, hundreds and maybe even thousands! SEO can be anything from internal linking and external linking to using META tags and ensuring that Google can find a site-map to find your previous posts and index those pages. By partaking in SEO, you will be making it easier for your site to be found by popular search engines, hence, more of your sites pages will be indexed and you will soon see an increase in traffic from search engine results pages.

  2. Hi Fabien,
This is one of the greatest post I’ve read for quite a long time. Your suggestions on how to increase traffic are very simple yet very understandable. I will do all your suggestions. Thanks so much for them. I will be reading your post again and again to really get the important points. God bless.

  3. No problem Mel, I am always trying to provide content for a range of audiences, good to hear your appreciate it. I will be releasing some more traffic development posts in the future. For the meantime, thanks for your comment, and stay subscribed.

  4. Happy Sunday morning, I think your point about making your blog a fun place to be is extremely important. You have to let your own unique personality shine and offer the readers a enjoyable, positive experience during every visit.

To do this, don’t copy what others are doing…instead, sing your own song. Nobody else can quite duplicate what you and you alone bring to the Internet. Enjoy, Barbara

  5. Thanks for your comment Barbara. I definitely agree with what you have to say; a blog that emulates another blog and tries to be the same is a bad blog. Remember the highly important quote…”An Original Is ALWAYS Worth More Than A Copy”

  6. Good post again..Just in time too since I am working on traffic increase to my blog

  7. Thanks chief3rd, if you need any specialised advice regarding your particular blog, feel free to email me and I’ll help out.

  8. Good ideas Fabien. How well does “CommentLuv” work for you? Thanks! :?:

  9. CommentLuv is working quite well :) No problems to report, thanks for the question and taking the time to visit and comment. Fabien.

  10. Great tips. I really think that leaving “thoughtful” comments on other blogs is a great way to get traffic. If someone leaves me a nice comment, I always visit their blog and do the same. I am really looking for some easy ways to get more hits and youre tips are oh so helpful!

  11. JULIE: Thanks for taking the time to comment Julie, I always appreciate some community participation and I love responding to comments – after all, you took the time to leave one, I should find the time to do the same.

I try my best not to re-hash any old content that’s already present out there. I try and release content that will actually help you in whatever you are trying to do. I always write proven methods for attaining traffic and I tend not to talk about stuff which I’ve heard about but have never tried. You are welcome back to the site anytime!

  12. Leaving thoughtful or meaningful comments on other blogs is not only a good way to bring more traffic to your site, but it’s just part of being a responsible, considerate blogger.

Everyone needs a little validation from time to time and there’s simply no better way to get that than from reader comments. Sure, you can pour over your stats, but that data only tells you if readers are showing up – comments let you know if those readers are actually connecting with your ideas or message.

Rob O.s last blog post..Are You Aware?

  13. ROB: I certainly agree with you Rob. People should definitely take on the role of being more thoughtful in the blogging community. We all need to band together to say no to spammers and enforce spam prevention on all kinds of blogs across the board.

There is nothing more that a blogger can get out of a post than thoughtful and meaningful comments – and the occasional bit of link love. The validation point is important and I think we all need to take on the role of helping to be the one who validates other people’s work by leaving comments which as you say – connect with the idea or message being conveyed.

Thank you for leaving this well thought out comment Rob, I responded to one of your comments at ProBlogger – hope you got it. Just to tell you know that there is some hope left in this world and not all teen bloggers are plastering their blogs with ads like there is no tomorrow – that’s always the wrong way to go. See you soon,
