Reasons Why You Should Be Using WordPress Tags
Throughout the past few months I have been using WordPress Tags, this was a new feature released with an earlier update of WordPress. I think it is a very good feature that WordPress decided to add, it not only allows you to link to keywords throughout your blog, it is also a good option for linking internally. But that is not all! This post covers the benefits of the tags and why I think you should be using it.
1. Get More Pages Indexed In Search Engines, More Traffic, More Linking
I am sure you will all love this one…since I started using WordPress tags I have noticed that more pages from the blog are being indexed in search engines as a result. This comes as no surprise considering the fact that the tags are related to keyword content in my blog. As we all know, getting indexed in the search engine results pages is more important than it used to be, which is why you should be using tags…who says no to a few extra pages in search engines? I know I don’t.
2. Tags Don’t Link To Posts Without Tags, Edit And Tag Old Posts
This is one important thing to note with regard to tags in WordPress, they do not link to other posts that do not have tags. So…if you wrote a really good post that was keyword rich and it did not have tags, it would not come up as a result when you clicked the particular keyword tag you were searching for. Don’t worry though, you can always go back to that article and insert WordPress tags, then it will be found.
3. Tags Will Bring In Some More Traffic And Will Inter-Link Your Posts
Yes they will! Since more pages are being indexed in the search engine ranking pages, you will get more traffic from queries made. Real life example: I have noticed that I am getting more traffic from Google, Yahoo and AOL search recently…this may definitely have something to do with the fact that I am using tags more frequently now than before.
4. Refining Tags And Keyword Choice For Optimal Ranking and Traffic
There is a balance between how many tags you choose to put in at the end of a post, some people think, put as much as possible – this will only dilute results and output less posts when the linked keyword is referenced in search engines. The other crowd believe that you should put as little as possible – this will return bulk posts but you will have to look deeper to find what you are looking for. Then there is the balance, put anywhere between 4 to 8 tags for each post. This will guarantee that a sufficient amount of posts are returned and they are all relating to the keyword.
5. Implementing The WordPress Tags Code, You Can Do It! It is Easy
This is not a difficult thing to do, it is relatively simply actually. When I was adding the ‘tags’ functionality to my WordPress theme, I found out that you have to insert a line of code at the end of the default posts page. The line of code is found below:
Have you used WordPress tags before? Are you still using? What are your opinions about it? I love to hear from my readers, so tell me about your experiences with WP tags. I hope you have enjoyed and understood this simplistic tutorial style post, if you have any questions of queries, feel free to head on over to my contact page and email me. Thanks, Fabien.

I think tags on the homepage can lead to a lot of false negaatives as the visitor may not see what he was searching for straight away although your site appeared for that keyword. Therefore the surfer is left to dig around on your site or simply leaves.
Sherry: Thank you for your insight Sherry, I have taken your point on board, my statistics at this point in time do not support 100% the theory of visitors being left to ‘dig around or leave’. In addition to this I have not noticed SmallFishBigMoney actually being ranked for the keywords on the homepage. Nonetheless I will look into the issue, people are, however, becoming used to tags and I believe that from a usability viewpoint, it is a great way to navigate around the site (given that articles have been tagged with great accuracy and precision).
