The Fundamentals Of A Successful Business

Businesses, Companies and Organizations: We live in a world where we are constantly being pitched to in one form or another by businesses and companies trying to get their word out there. Advertising is only one part of what is in essence a much bigger picture. I am referring to a company or organization. Call it a corporation if you want, most of these big businesses follow a relatively common set of fundamentals for successful business. There are however, companies nowadays that are reworking the model and taking into consideration more of what employees think as opposed to what the big boss wants.

Think Of Them As Little Cities…And Then A Country: As strange as this may seem, you have this kind of approach to understand each ’sector’ or ‘department’ of a company or corporation. The typical departments or sections of a company will be covered further later on in this article; for now, you need to know that the departments are grouped into the following: administration, public relations, sales and marketing, advertising, branding and media development, human resources, finance and miscellaneous (groups that don’t warrant a heading but are still in existence).

Now How Do These Headings Relate To Websites? As a site owner or a person thinking of a business venture, these may not seem overly apparent to you at first. They do not seem apparent because you are probably responsible for doing everything…Many people will see this as being a good thing, but for the most part it is not. You can’t do everything by yourself, if you are a blogger, perhaps you can juggle promoting, writing content and branding, but if you are thinking bigger, think about business partnerships or forming your own ‘group’ or ‘media organization’.

Starting A Business: A task that many people find daunting, but they only find it daunting because they do not have a firm understand of what a business is, how to grow a business, how to brand a company, how to manage a business etc…Don’t go into business without some common sense and a firm grounding and understanding of the fundamental aspects of business. There are three broad overarching themes or goals to aim for when considering starting a business, found below.

1. The Idea: A business will always emerge from an idea, an idea that is usually fueled by a need for or a lack of a commodity in a particular area of life. These needs take the form of a problem solution for a large percentage of the time. The business idea will usually be supported by a direct form of revenue or a secondary stream of income. An example of this is a website, they are usually supported by advertising and that is therefore a secondary income stream.

The idea for a business needs to be developed and well thought out. A carefully thought out business plan, backed by an effective advertising and marketing campaign can and will yield mass commissions. Developing an idea for a business requires that all the bits and pieces be thought of prior to commencing it or even telling people about it. You always want your product to be ready to go when you starting pitching it, you want to have thought of bits and pieces ahead of your audience, to ensure a successful sale.

2. The Implementation: Alright, you have your idea, you’ve made a detailed and structured plan of what you want to do and how you are going to achieve it. Now…all you need to do is implement your business plan and focus on making it a success. For every business model there are different ways of making your business successful, there is not overarching rule or method that can be used across all the different business models and plans out there.

If you are focusing on online success, there are several ways you can go about advertising or marketing your product. Similarly if you are an off-line service, there are also ways in which you can use traditional media to market your product or service; and most of the time you can use both. A business’ success usually lies in the quality of the product or service - first and foremost and secondly, it rests in the advertising and marketing campaign for that product or service. But more importantly, your product’s success rests in the hands of the consumer and their chatter boxes…word of mouth marketing is still is and will continue to be one of the most powerful forms of marketing - especially if an authoritative figure endorses a product.

3. The Sustainability: Rapid growth, development, competition, market intelligence…Can you keep up? To sustain your business or product in the long run, you are going to need a team of workers that are dedicated to your company and know exactly what is going on. In order to keep an ongoing flow of sales of your product or service, you need to have people answering calls and emails to resolve any problem or problems your client may be having - you need to be able to resolve the problem very quickly and efficiently (this is where your competition can gain extra brownie points over your service if you are not quick enough).

Are you aware of the developments in your market? Market intelligence is key to running a successful business - you need to know what is going on, has someone opened up a business similar to yours? If they have, what are people saying about it? Is it being heralded as better than yours? If so, your team need to find out why and need to speedily find a way to counteract this statement and make yours better…But you should not need to do this if your business had a well thought out strategy or plan to begin with.

Business Fundamentals: Running a successful business, that has the ability to churn out profits on a daily basis is not easy, elements such as advertising, marketing, public relations, human resources, administration, branding are all a crucial part of a company or organization. They are the elements of running a profitable business. These topics or secondary areas or departments will be covered later on in this business fundamentals course.
