Blog Profiling Sites Declare War! Who Wins…?
Blog Profiling Sites: Most bloggers I know have a profile on either one or more than one blog catalog style sites. These sites cropped up in around mid 2004 and grew in popularity from then on. MyBlogLog was bought by Yahoo last year and has since been ‘attempting’ to better itself and the services it provides. MyBlogLog’s popularity has been declining as illustrated by the two graphs below from Alexa and Compete market intelligence charts.
When you look at these graphs, there are 3 basic observations that can be made, MyBlogLog was very popular at the end of 2007 and it has since declined in popularity. Why has MyBlogLog declined in popularity? Could it be because of changes to the profile layouts? Or maybe people feel that it is not as organized or community oriented as BlogCatalog.
The Alexa graph shows statistics over a longer period of time than the Compete graph, But both do a good job of illustrating how BlogCatalog is beginning to rise higher and higher, in 2008 alone BlogCatalog saw a great amount of growth after a period of lackluster performance in early 2007. BlogCatalog has been steadily improving its services and has always had a more community feel to it than MyBlogLog.
Quantcast statistics on the right show BlogCatalog as a clear winner in the battle of the blog profiling sites. The statistics show that Bumpzee gets a mere 16,686 unique visitors per month (approximation of non-quantified site). MyBlogLog gets 114,354 unique visitors per month and BlogCatalog is way out in front with a whopping 543,042 unique visitors per month.
One thing is evident from these statistics, BlogCatalog is currently a front-runner in the ongoing battle of the blog profiling sites. BlogCatalog released some new innovations ever since it has been under new management. Some of these new innovations include the ‘Dashboard’ feature and the ‘Activity’ feed. MyBlogLog’s new features have been good, but do not provide users with a great level of usefulness. As for Bumpzee, it seems like it is staying on a bit of a flat with no apparent increase in traffic, if anything, its traffic is slowly declining.
Personal Opinion: When I first started blogging, MyBlogLog was my number one choice, but I found that it did not have a lot of functionality or serve as much a purpose as BlogCatalog did. Over the past few months I have found that BlogCatalog is expanding and I like the overall look and feel of it, it feels more like a community than MyBlogLog does. The big deciding factor between MyBlogLog and BlogCatalog was the ability to participate in discussions and create or join groups – this plays an important role in creating the community feel that BlogCatalog has over MyBlogLog.

Wow, mybloglog was so dominant just a few months ago I had no idea it’s been so quickly supplanted by blogcatalog. I don’t like the profiles in mybloglog and others obviously don’t as well.

I’m wondering how reliable Alexa and Compete are? Isn’t it true that only those with installed Alexa toolbars are those that provide stats for analogy? Not sure..just asking.
Other than that, I think MyBlogLog has great potential, but we have to optimize it better as users in order to benefit our own causes as well as MBL. I have gotten a lot of enjoyment from their network. I wish more people were faithful to it. But it seems I’ve made friends with people that don’t even update or socialize together.
I guess I got lucky. I am new at this and signed up with Blog catalog. I like it and find myself going back regularly. Given what you say is it worth signing up at MyBlogLog? Or would time be better spent at blog catalog? By the way I found you from your guest post on John Chow’s site. Ned Carey
I have never really spent much time on Technorati, MyBlogLog or other sites like these but since I have started participating to BlogCatalog, I have never looked back!
I love joining in the discussions, finding new friends, joining groups and I think that the broadcast feature can give you a nice little traffic boost (guess how I found your blog?)
I’d really liked to have seen these two compared with Technorati.
