What Elements Make For A Delicious Blog Post?

Seth Godin - A Modern Day Marketing Marvel

Content Is King, But What Comes A Close Second…?

We are all very much aware that content is king - it’s only been reiterated to us a thousand times over. What comes after content however is the delivery of the content. It’s all well and good to have a hard hitting blog post that has great content, but if it’s all paragraphs without formatting, you can guarantee yourself that you just made the reader lose interest in your site and anything else you have to say.

I’ve outlined several times before and I’ve placed great emphasis on the importance of structuring and formatting content well. Today, I want to talk about what elements make a post delicious for readers, what makes them want to eat the post and what makes their mouth water when they look at the post at first glance. This post will explore several elements of a blog post that make it inviting - making readers want to digest even more of your content.

You’ve Heard About Bulleted Lists…But Do You Make Full Use Of Them?

You might use them occasionally, but most people don’t make sufficient use of them. Lists are one of the best ways to keep reader attention and deliver content to them quickly and succinctly. There is no need to go into paragraphs and paragraphs of detail to explain something that be be easily summed up in a couple of dot points or less.

The impact a high quality bulleted list can have on a reader is huge, just the other day I was reading some content from a blog. I was reading a post that had a list in it…do you know what I did? I didn’t read the entire post, I skipped to the list, read what the blogger had to say - and within minutes I had subscribed to that particular blogs RSS feed. That is evidence of the power of a small and tiny thing called a list.

What About Block-Quotes…They’re Fantastic, Do You Use Them Often?

Block quotes are a great way to present targeted parts of your content to your readers. Unfortunately, people don’t make enough use of these great devices, I highly recommend using them to present important parts of a post to your readers. Formerly block quotes were used only to present direct quotes - but they are now being used as a device to draw attention to a particular part of a post as opposed to showing quoted text only.

It’s All About Stopping Readers In Their Tracks…Can You Do It?

All of this talk about lists and block quotes point to one important, overarching theme - stop readers in their tracks. Ask yourself - what makes me stop scrolling when I read a blog post or any article for that matter? The answer to this question is all to do with the formatting of the text and what the post includes (images, lists, bold text, italics, text alignment, paragraph size etc…)

These are the same things that I teach my writers to do on client blogs. Block quotes and lists are great devices. I also like to see tags and h1, h2, and h3 tags in the subheads (alternatively, font color and size tags). Bottom line, visual elements on a blog are almost as important as content if you want your blog to be read.
