What’s Motivating You To Become An Entrepreneur?

June 22nd, 2008 by Fabien

Why Do You Want To Become An Entrepreneur? Entrepreneurial Motivation

Finding Motivation is one society’s biggest problems, people complain that they can’t find it when they’re carrying out a piece of work; this is of therefore a big problem. Especially in workplaces where people are counting on you to deliver the best material you can output. Where do you find motivation? People tend to get motivated to carry out tasks and complete given work when they have something they want to achieve by doing the work, some people like to refer to these as goals or incentives; but I think the word is over used and has subsequently lost its meaning over time.

Entrepreneurial Motivation, What Is It and How Do You Really Find It?

Entrepreneurial Motivation can be more difficult to find than your good old fashioned ‘motivation‘ on its own, because most of the time it’s a kind of motivation that needs to really be thought about and planned. Why? Entrepreneurial Motivation is usually long term, and that’s why it needs to be broken down into something more short term. This post explores three main motivational factors which influence people’s decisions when quitting their jobs; and how these reasons can be used as entrepreneurial motivation for the long haul.

1. Do You Want To Make A Name For Yourself? Be Yourself And Exude Confidence.

Perez Hilton, The Ultimate Celebrity Blogger! I find that a lot of people who ultimately decide to leave the workplace and go off to begin their entrepreneurial endeavors, are fueled by a passion for some kind of celebrity status or authority figure, in a particular field or niche. Personally, I think that this can be a very good type of motivation to have because there are always opportunities to feel that you’re actually increasing people’s awareness of who you are; and what you’re an expert at. This is especially true when it comes to all the social media sites and applications which are being released daily; you can constantly be marketing yourself.

2. You Want To Start A Business Of Your Own? This Is Your Driving Force!

Donald Trump People quit their job because they want to be their own boss and start their own company…This is their motivation and it can be quite powerful. Owning a business can be a double edged sword; we’ve seen so many example of people try and fail and in business it happens a lot. Successful business can be summed up in a couple of words, including that of planning, implementing, analyzing and optimizing; in addition to this: your service or product should be top notch and high quality. A business will only be great if you have a distinct passion for what you’re doing. Passion breeds creativity and creativity breeds ideas; most of the time - ideas breed better business.

3. Maybe You Want To Escape From The Cubicle? This Can Be Great Motivation.

Jaime Luchuck and Joel Comm from Next Internet Millionaire Tired of your boss screaming at you? Frustrated with the cubicle in which you spend most of your day. Is the rat race getting to you? Ever feel like you could be doing something so much more rewarding and probably end up living a much longer life? All of these questions above are examples of great, long term motivational goals which you can use to motivate yourself to continue developing a business model and implementing it. If you have a sound business strategy with a solid foundation, your business is likely to succeed, every time you feel discouraged; just remember you could be chasing trains and catching buses.

Do You Have The Professional Attitude, A Winning Personality and A Room Filling Presence?

One thing you need to understand is that there will always be highs and lows…it’s only natural. Stress, pressure, money and time constraints may eventually affect you. The most important message to remember is not to give in to these short term demoralizers; you can and you will get over them. Think long term, think about the bigger picture, motivate yourself by recalling what you were and envisioning what you will eventually become.

This is where the professional attitude comes in. In everything you do, you should aim for maximized efficiency and productivity; if you have a construction crew carrying out work, ensure they know the deadline and that work being executed daily meets quality and standards as well as maintaining and sticking to a rigorous work schedule.

Your personality needs to be great, remember that you have the power to influence people by using the mood in which you are in. Strive to be bubbly, friendly and full of energy; this can only happen if you have a balanced lifestyle, an excellent state of overall general health and a great well-being. Your presence needs to be so big that it fills a room and motivates others around you to get the job done because your excitement and presence will rub off on the workers.

Yep. I find all three of these are very relevant to me. It’s important to keep a vision of your perfect end-point which you can draw on when you’re feeling down. It sometimes helps if you put a motivational picture or quote on the wall where you work to help you through bad patches. Here’s a free one: Start by doing what’s necessary, then what’s possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible - Francis of Assisi.

Another thing that’s important is that your motivation is genuine. It’s no good going into a venture you don’t fully believe in but you think will make you famous, you won’t give all your commitment and most likely you’ll fail.

    Hope this helps.

 MATT: Thanks for commenting Matt, It seems you always get the ball rolling nowadays, good on you. You’re absolutely right on all count, I especially like the end-point comment, it’s definitely a must for any entrepreneurial mind in the making. I love the idea about motivational pictures and quotes, the Francis of Assisi one is spot on.

Another great one is by Siddhartha Buddha - “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, but concentrate the mind on the present moment”. It’s so important for people not to get carried away about the future, because they need to built a solid foundation before they can achieve their goals in life, and building that foundation is all dependent on what you do right now.

I am very grateful that you brought up the ‘genuine’ point. Society is taking to ‘peer pressure’ much more than ever before, so I believe it’s quintessential that we look to really figuring out and asking ourselves “Does this really reflect me?” and “Is This What I Want To Become?”. As usual - great comments Matt, can’t fault you, great to see you around here again.

I’d have to say the first two are definitely relevant to me. I’m not exactly in a cubicle position. Excellent post as always Fabien. Keep it up!

Great idea to start people thinking about their motivation. What motivates you determines so many things including whether or not to start your own business and what kind of business to start. Another possible motivational factor for you: people who work from home to be closer to family.

My wife and I started our own business after our son was born because neither one of us wanted to go back to work and leave him at home. We’ve also come across people who stay at home to be closer to a sick relative or spouse.

Whatever people’s motivations are, it’s important for them to recognize them and to be honest. If you want to start your own business because you want to make a ton of cash, don’t let others tell you that’s not a godd reason. It’s your business and your reasoning. After all, they’re not going to be running the business for you.

 BRETT: Thanks for the comment Brett, making a name for yourself is such a great one; because there are endless opportunities to make yourself known to other people - especially with social media, new micro-blogging services (Twitter, Pownce, Plurk, FriendFeed) and the good old instant messenger. Nice to see you around here again.

 JAMIE: Thanks for sharing Jamie, I am with you one hundred percent on this one. Motivation can be the deciding factor to how well a project or venture is executed. If you have the right driving force, it will be so much easier for things to fall into place. The family motivation point is a very strong one; it’s a very powerful one which doesn’t die out too easily.

At the moment I’m doing a college production of ‘Grease’ and motivation is so important; it’s what helps me to really get active and deliver my lines well as well as remembering my lines; and it gives me the strength I need to keep pushing on. If I didn’t have some sort of motivation pushing me to do better each time; I wouldn’t be nearly as good at delivering a powerful and passionate performance.

I love your thinking about the “Business for a ton of cash” - and it’s true. People have successfully achieved billion dollar businesses as a result of one reason and one reason only, cash. This links to one of the points I firmly believe in; you shouldn’t let anyone, but yourself, decide what you want to become. Go for it, aim extremely high, and if you get halfway; keep on going! Thanks for the comment Jamie, great blog by the way! See you again soon
